PAEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY
The Paediatric Cardiology service was started in 2005 in Sarawak General Hospital under the umbrella of Department of Paediatrics. The objective was to provide subspecialty care to children with congenital and acquired heart diseases for the whole state of Sarawak which was lacking before this. It was initially run by a single consultant, Dr Martin Wong. In collaboration with departments of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiac Anaesthesia, the service gradually expanded in many aspects of care including cardiac imaging, catheter interventions, surgery and adult congenital heart. This included first paediatric open heart surgery in March 2005 and first paediatric cardiac catheter intervention in October 2005.
In 2008, it was gazetted as one of the training centers for the Ministry of Health subspecialty fellowship programme.
In year 2011, the service was moved to Sarawak Heart Center at Kota Samarahan and renamed Paediatric Cardiology Unit. Dr Lim Wooi Kok joined the unit as the second consultant in August 2016.
